Hey Reader, Today I want to share with you the story of when I nearly lost everything. It was difficult to write this, but I hope it helps a few of you who need to read it. It was the end of 2016, life was great. I was 'crushing it'. After spending some time in the US working solely on Bootcamp Ideas, I was back in Australia being busy. You know, when some asks you 'How are you?' and you say after a short pause 'Busy'. I was running my old bootcamp 7+ sessions per week, growing BootCraft which was still a baby, creating content for Bootcamp Ideas (blogging, a newsletter AND a podcast) and developing a new in-person accreditation for bootcamp instructors with my friend, Dale Sidebottom. I had a ton of momentum behind me and I was super excited by all of these projects. That's important to mention, I loved everything I was working on. But then one day I woke up and I just couldn't bring myself to do any work. And then the next day it was the same. After a week I started beating myself. I didn't understand what was going on and the voice in my head just got meaner and meaner. I felt myself slipping into depression - a familiar friend of mine in that period. It was an extremely dark time for me. At this point it would be easy to write 'And then I got help and everything was okay' but it wasn't that simple. I wasn't able to work. My marriage was put to the test. There were many dark, stubborn weeks in there before I finally went and saw my psychologist. And then months and months of building back up my capacity to work. Looking back I can see that I was beyond depleted because I had utterly burned myself out. It's a common affliction for those of us who are driven to help others. Who see a group of people that are underserved and want to do everything to make life better for them. It's not the only time I've faced burnout, but it was definitely the worst. In hindsight, I burned out because I was trying to keep up with everyone around me. I kept taking on more and more until I was operating well beyond my capacity which is fine for short periods of time, but long-term it wore me down. The keyword here is capacity. As I mention in this week's podcast, it's different for everyone and your capacity can fluctuate depending on what's going on in your life. Whether you've faced burn out, are worried you're burning out right now or even if you've never felt like you've burned out, I recommend checking out my new episode on PT burn out: π§ Listen: The 3 Bβs of Avoiding PT Burnout: Whatβs Actually Worked for Meβ Masterclass: How to plan workouts fast - without sacrificing qualityPlanning and programming workouts probably takes you a huge amount of time every week, but it doesn't have to be that way.
