Outdoor cardio ideas, disruptive clients and March's workout plan

Hey Reader,

I know you likely follow me for my workout ideas (don't worry, I've got one for you below) but lately you might have seen me write about my new podcast.

So far I've recorded episodes on building a following, improving your classes, hiring trainers and disruptive clients and now I have a question for you:

If I was to dedicate the next episode of my podcast to you and the challenge you're currently facing... what would that episode be?

I'd love to learn more about YOU and your business. Just reply directly to this newsletter.

Now, here are some ideas to help you this week:

Clients who talk too much, or worse, bring everyone else down

Ever had a client whose negativity sucked the energy out of your entire class? I've just put together a new podcast episode where I share a personal story of how one difficult client killed an entire time slot in my bootcamp—and what I wish I had done differently. Listen here

The 3 phases of being a trainer

From my own experience and observations there are 3 phases that we go through as bootcamp coaches:

  • Phase 1: Trying to get some new bootcamp classes going and find a few people to come along.
  • Phase 2: Your bootcamp is well established and now we're looking at ways to turn it into a full-time income.
  • Phase 3: Things are going well and you might be looking at reducing your training hours. Perhaps by bringing in other trainers or by beginning to teach what you know to a broader audience online.

These 3 phases aren't linear. Perhaps you were thinking about phase 3 and then moved to a new area and went back to phase 1. That's okay, but know that what works at phase 3 is different to what works at phase 1 so adjust accordingly.

New workout plan for March: Hills & Stairs

If your stuck for workout ideas next month, never fear, Kyle is here. I've put together a 4 week plan for you, simply take a few minutes each week to look at what's coming up, then use the suggested drills to make your own workout (I've included a few done-for-you sessions if you're stuck). This month's theme, Hills & Stairs, is focused on improving our clients cardio fitness, but without any long distance running. It's available on BootCraft now.

Crest The Hill AMRAP

The first workout in March's plan is called Crest The Hill. It's a 2 part workout consisting of some AMRAPs to begin with (where clients work in groups of 3) and then an EMOM to finish off. A while back I recorded a video of me explaining the drill so I thought I'd share that here as this week's workout idea. Check the video description section for the notes.

The Finisher

Your BWOD (Business Workout Of the Day) is to take a moment to think of a disruptive client who comes to class. Maybe they're a bit of a chatty Cathy or maybe they're constantly arriving late.

Pick a time next week that you'll talk to them (after class or on the phone - don't message them as it's too easy for things to be misunderstood) and gently address with them your concerns. You can use these 5 tips from the podcast:

  1. Start with curiosity, not assumptions. Ask good questions to find out what's causing the issue.
  2. Set clear expectations early by including reminders in welcome emails and health screen forms.
  3. Address issues in private (like the phone call or after class when everyone else has left).
  4. Give clients a path forward once you understand where they're coming from. Perhaps arriving on time isn't feasible, so it will be more about arriving late without disrupting others.
  5. Know when it's time to part ways. Sometimes you're just not the right fit for this client.

Here's what's happening on Bootcamp Ideas in February:

🏫 Continued Ed.: Who would like to participate in the next Group Flow cohort? Just reply to this email if you're keen with something like 'I'd like to do Group Flow'.

A couple of pieces of feedback I keep getting from last year's participants are that a) they left the course feeling motivated to actually get started and b) they learned stuff about marketing they'd never seen before.

One trainer told me this week she's added 3 clients to her virtual classes using what she learned in Group Flow and another started a 4 week yoga series with 18 participants!

🛠️ BootCraft: This week on BootCraft I'm sharing the workout plan for the month of March. The theme is workouts that use hills and stairs. I've also added and updated 4 new drills: Gift & ReGift, All For Show, 3 Whiteboards and Stair Supersets. Members can access them from the BootCraft dashboard right away, if you're not a member you can join here.

📖 Reading: I'm currently reading Meditations for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman. I really enjoyed his previous book, Four Thousand Weeks, too. Both are about how we're utterly overwhelmed with things to do and that answer isn't better productivity systems, but instead to accept that we won't get everything done and what that looks like.

🔍 Blast from the past: 4 Excellent Bootcamp Stair Drills (plus bonus stair exercises)

And with that, have a great weekend!

Issue #9 18 November, 2025 Update from Kyle ↓ Dear Reader, This is going to be a fairly long email so here is the TLDR: I’m taking a break from updating Bootcamp Ideas for 30 days. That includes new articles, newsletters, courses and podcasts. BootCraft will be running as normal with weekly updates. I’m doing this to make space for a couple of experiments. Okay, so if you’re wanting to know the reasoning behind this, join me and read on! Group Flow Flop I had been planning to write this exact...

Hey Reader, Today I want to share with you the story of when I nearly lost everything. It was difficult to write this, but I hope it helps a few of you who need to read it. It was the end of 2016, life was great. I was 'crushing it'. After spending some time in the US working solely on Bootcamp Ideas, I was back in Australia being busy. You know, when some asks you 'How are you?' and you say after a short pause 'Busy'. I was running my old bootcamp 7+ sessions per week, growing BootCraft...
