What I learned about marketing by taking time off

A new workshop for coaches and trainers

Dear Reader,

It's been a month since I've sent a newsletter so I'm back today to update you on what's been going on.

I'm going to share 2 things with you:

  1. Important insights I've had while taking a break
  2. Something new I'd like to invite you to

Let's get into the deets of these insights.

The first week I took off from the weekly grind that of creating content (a thing that seems necessary even for face to face businesses these days [it isn't, but more on that in a mo]), it was like taking a huge sigh of relief.

I had no idea how much needing to write a newsletter, create a podcast and any other content I needed to do for Bootcamp Ideas was hanging over me like a guillotine that was about to fall. I was constantly worried that if I missed a week, you, as in you the reader, would be pissed off at me.

Totally irrational I know, but I think we all do this.

For example, as trainers we freak out at the thought of cancelling our classes for a week so that we can take time off. As a parent I can’t wait to have a moment to myself and then instantly start missing my kids.

By listening to that voice of fear instead, I drove myself into burnout.

So I’ve been sleeping a lot. And when I’m not sleeping, often resting. I'd say I haven’t rested like this since before my kids were born.

Because here's the thing, when I always felt under the gun, I didn’t have the mental capacity to really plan ahead. I was just in survival mode. This slowness has also led to me working out more and eating better. Doing things like going for hikes as a family on the weekend and seeing more of friends and family.

So what’s next?

This time off has been so nourishing and helpful that I'm going to extend it... for another 60 days.

Going into this period of time I wanted to take 90days off, but it seemed like too much. Remember, survival mode. How dare I rest? So I gave myself permission to take 30 days and then extend it at the end if need be. Because, what are we doing in this industry of helping people live healthier lives if we're not paying attention to our own health and wellbeing?

So, I'm shooting for full 90.

Except... for one thing.

Instead of creating newsletters, podcasts and social media content this month, much of which I’ll agonise over and most of which will probably be quickly forgotten, I’d rather do something a bit more sticky.

Something that will actually help you.

Many of you expressed an interest in my 4-week workshop called Group Flow, but the pricing and/or timing didn’t work for you. So I’ve taken one lesson from Group Flow - the one that participants said they loved the most - and I've spiffed it up into a 2 hour workshop called Connection Marketing.

I was going to charge money for this, but then I realised I’d much rather have you get access to the tools to grow your business and then have you hire me in a 1 on 1 or group setting in the future than charge a few dollars for something now.

This workshop is perfect for you if you feel like you're spinning your wheels with marketing.

For example, do any of these ring true?

  1. You feel like you have no idea where to start with promoting your business. Social media, referrals, workshops, something else?!?! Help!
  2. Your business used to grow fine, but now what used to work is no longer working and things have plateaued.
  3. Your marketing kind of works, but it's totally burning you out. You're exhausted doing all the things.

This interactive workout will show you how connection is the most important factor in marketing, and how to connect with your audience and future customers in a way that works for you.

It’s totally interactive, I’ll give you activities to do during the call so you’ll walk away at the end of the workshop ready to go. You’ll also get a workbook to fill up with notes.

This is such a better use of your time than just consuming another piece of content or buying another course that you won’t actually do.

Details are here:

Connection Marketing Workshop

Yes, you’ll get a copy of the recording if you can’t make it live. That said, if there are a lot of sign ups I’ll look at running a few different times.

See you next week,

Kyle

P.S. What's the catch? Why is this free? This is my own form of Connection Marketing. While many of you will do the workshop and feel that's enough, some of you will want to work with me in a paid ongoing way afterwards. That said, I'm not holding anything back, this a full, complete workshop. Grab your spot.

P.P.S. If you’re interested in 1:1 coaching now, here are the details.

tl:dr: If you’ve skipped to the end because this is a long email, here’s what you need to know. I’ve had a restful 30 days off. I’m extending it for another 60 days. Instead of making new podcasts or writing newsletters for you, I’ve made a workshop and it’s free to attend. I’m also taking on 1:1 clients.

Issue #9 02 July, 2025 Update from Kyle ↓ Dear Reader, This is going to be a fairly long email so here is the TLDR: I’m taking a break from updating Bootcamp Ideas for 30 days. That includes new articles, newsletters, courses and podcasts. BootCraft will be running as normal with weekly updates. I’m doing this to make space for a couple of experiments. Okay, so if you’re wanting to know the reasoning behind this, join me and read on! Group Flow Flop I had been planning to write this exact...

Hey Reader, Today I want to share with you the story of when I nearly lost everything. It was difficult to write this, but I hope it helps a few of you who need to read it. It was the end of 2016, life was great. I was 'crushing it'. After spending some time in the US working solely on Bootcamp Ideas, I was back in Australia being busy. You know, when some asks you 'How are you?' and you say after a short pause 'Busy'. I was running my old bootcamp 7+ sessions per week, growing BootCraft...

Hey Reader, I know you likely follow me for my workout ideas (don't worry, I've got one for you below) but lately you might have seen me write about my new podcast. So far I've recorded episodes on building a following, improving your classes, hiring trainers and disruptive clients and now I have a question for you: If I was to dedicate the next episode of my podcast to you and the challenge you're currently facing... what would that episode be? I'd love to learn more about YOU and your...
